Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Ships
Roskilde has been home of Vikings, the metropolis of Denmark, and it is the burial place for royals.
If you have time, a visit to Roskilde is a must - it is one of Denmark’s oldest and most historically rich cities. Roskilde Cathedral is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, and you can visit the amazing Viking Ship Museum.
With train from Copenhagen’s central station, it only takes 20 min. to reach Roskilde. The city offers both a small-town coziness and a significant place in Danish history. You can purchase your train tickets in the app DOT.
The old part of Roskilde is also situated in the National Park Skjoldungernes Land, and it was once the metropolis of Denmark - it served as the royal seat and one of the country’s most important religious and political centers.
Its strategic location at the end of the Roskilde Fjord made it a vital Viking settlement, offering trade and protection.
Five original 11th-century Viking ships are on display at the Viking Ship Museum. The seafaring age is brought to life through interactive exhibits and working ship reconstructions. The museum is open 7 days a week. Find out about the opening hours, entrance prices and all the activities they offer here.
Remember to visit the Roskilde Cathedral too, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Since the 15th century, it has been the royal burial church, housing the tombs of around 40 Danish kings and queens. The cathedral offers an extraordinary journey in time. Remember to check the opening hours.
