CopenHill – Activities and Recycling
Rent a bike and ride to CopenHill, the best viewpoint in Copenhagen.
CopenHill, also called Amager Bakke, is a groundbreaking waste-to-energy power plant just outside central Copenhagen. Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), it transforms non-recyclable waste into clean energy (heating for 150,000 homes and electricity for 60,000–100,000 homes).
Architecture & sustainability
Bjarke Ingels envisioned a “hedonistic sustainability” project: an industrial facility so clean and integrated it becomes a social landmark. Sloping silver aluminum “bricks,” abundant daylight, green biodiversity, and the unusual blend of energy infrastructure with public recreation mark a new model for city architecture.
But its real standout feature is the year‑round urban mountain on its 85 m-tall roof top.
What to do there:
Hike or run the green, winding path to the summit (490 m long) that feels like a true Nordic mountain fringe with shrubs, trees, and great city panoramas.
Ski or snowboard year-round on a 400–500 m dry slope covered in Neveplast fiber, no real snow needed and served by four lifts (magic carpets, T-bars) catering to all levels from beginner to red run.
Take the glass elevator straight to the top for café drinks or just to soak in the 360° view.
Relax in après-ski-style bars and restaurants at both the base and summit, ideal after hiking or skiing.
On one vertical facade is the world’s tallest artificial climbing wall, about 80–85 m (279 ft) high. Manufactured by Walltopia in close cooperation with BIG and the Danish Climbing Federation, it features fiberglass panels, aluminum “bricks,” and natural rock-like formations including overhangs, cracks, and aretes.
Entry to the rooftop is free for hiking, running, or enjoying the view, only skiing, gear rental, or climbing require tickets.
